Every bet in Shock Tower sends a bolt of electricity racing up a tower in the center of the screen. Depending on how high the bolt makes it up, lightning can spread out and zap into crystals floating around the screen. Each crystal already has a prize value labeled on it, so you know exactly what’s at stake even before anything has been struck.
This is no traditional casino game. There aren’t any spinning reels or paylines to track, and there’s nothing to line up either. Gameplay feels more like an arcade game, particularly given the setting of jagged rock formations with green energy crackling off the tower. The sky blends deep reds and purples, while sound effects are sci-fi-esque with their buzzing electricity and laser-like pops.
Chain Lightning
After one crystal pays out, there’s a chance lightning will spread out to others on the board. These extra zaps come at random and don’t cost you anything – no need for a new bet or a specific trigger. The Chain Lightning feature just comes off the back of a prize you’ve already collected, adding to the round’s total.
Prize Display
What makes Shock Tower different from a standard game is that there’s nothing hidden. You can see every prize value before the spire even fires – green crystals hold the low-end amounts, while pink ones have bigger numbers attached. This transparency gives the game an element of suspense, as you’re constantly operating in a position of anticipation.
Super Lightning
This feature triggers at random. When it hits, every prize gets amplified by between 2x and 7x. There’s no way of controlling or activating it. When it hits during a round where pink crystals already have high values, a routine play can produce big results.
